How Readability Scores Work

Readability formulas measure how easy text is to understand based on sentence length and word complexity. They're used by educators, content marketers, UX writers, and anyone who needs their writing to connect with a specific audience.

Flesch Reading Ease

Scores range from 0 to 100. Higher is easier to read. Most web content should aim for 60–70 (8th–9th grade level).

206.835 − 1.015 × (words ÷ sentences) − 84.6 × (syllables ÷ words)

Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level

Translates readability into a U.S. school grade level. A score of 8 means an 8th grader can understand the text.

0.39 × (words ÷ sentences) + 11.8 × (syllables ÷ words) − 15.59

Score Interpretation

90–100: Very easy (5th grade) — suited for children
60–70: Standard (8th–9th grade) — ideal for most web content
30–50: Difficult (college level) — academic or technical writing
0–30: Very difficult (graduate level) — legal, scientific papers
